Real Men Zumba

14 10 2009

Yeah…you heard me. Real men zumba. I also like going to Broadway musicals, reading romance novels and long walks on the beach. Well, that’s not totally true. I don’t like walking.

It’s been a little over a week since I finished P90X and what have I done since?

Absolutely nothing.

I mean I didn’t return to my gluttonous eating ways, but I didn’t exercise AT ALL for an entire week. That may not sound strange to you, but if you have been exercising for at least an hour each day for 90 days and then you go to nothing, it just doesn’t feel right.

I decided to Zumba with some of my coworkers (Isa, Denise and Sharon). Here’s our zumbalicious class:

Can you spot the manly man?

I have to admit. Being the only dude in the class makes me a little nervous. I don’t know if it’s all guys in that situation, but what ran through my mind was, “If I was to fight all these women at once, I don’t think I would win.” Don’t get me wrong. I would never hurt a lady. It’s just one of those random hypotheticals you wonder about sometimes. Another one I wonder about too is how would I do in the cage with a professional UFC fighter? How would I do in the cage with Kimly? I mean he owns a Tapout t-shirt. That’s got to account for 10% more striking power just like the kids out there gain 10hp by affixing a Mรผgen sticker on their Hondas…

Zumba is fun. I’m not super coordinated. I’m pretty good with my feet, but when you throw in the hand movements, I’m sort of a mess. But I have fun with it. I look at my teacher’s hips and butt (not like that…you sickos) and I try to emulate what I think is going on there. I need to video myself trying to move my hips because I don’t think I can gyrate it properly. I am booty-shaking challenged just like most men of Anglo descent.

When I’m out in Ohio…Zumba will be part of the exercise rotation. Here’s a picture of me and the booty-shaking teacher. She does very well for a white girl…and I mean that in a good way. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sweating is good for you

I’m going to look for a local Yoga class. See if I can get more crazy with my downward facing dog pose.

I am happy. =)
Don’t be sad. I’ll be your friend.
Not sure where your home is, but if it’s within a 20 mile radius of zip code 45373, sure…I’ll visit your home.

Well, hello manly zumba man. I love zumba ! I take classes at the YMCA and in the zumba class there is always a lonely man in the back and it’s never the same one…I guess they get spooked by all those hips and coordinated movements.
It’s fun to hear-read about a man liking zumba.
I also think that not exercising at all during a whole week doesn’t feel right. It makes me feel grungy inside. ๐Ÿ™‚

Honestly, one of the big reasons i get scared in the class is because I represent the male sex in Zumba. Every wrong step. Every missing hip rotation. Every female accidentally swatted by my clumsy arms is a step backwards for the brotherhood. But I will not give up until there are at least 2 men in a Zumba class. Brothers unite! hehehehe

Your blog was forwarded to me by a co-worker because it sounds just like me and my husband. I happen to be a Zumba instructor and my husband a personal trainer. I love Zumba and he is obsessed over P90X. He has me doing P90 three times per week. We are now going to start the Insanity work out by Shawn T who started out doing the hip hop abs videos. It is also strange because my husband is from Cleveland Ohio and he now lives in California with me.
Good luck to you and keep moving.

Hey! I thought you were just really good about photo albums or something… =P I didn’t know this one going on a blog- I would’ve never agreed to that last gross pic… haha =P Oh well- I’m so glad that you came to class and that you enjoyed it! You do great- booty, hips, and all… Real men DO Zumba! Zumba was invented by a man- people think that it’s just for ladies, but it’s not! Zumba is fun, it’s different, and it’s effective! Who wouldn’t want to?? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ll make sure the ladies don’t ever attack you- I think you could take us though… haha =P

Thanks for writing about Zumba! I take Zumba classes form this same instructor in a different location. My husband has expressed a teeny-tiny bit of interest in going. He’s a manly man kinda guy with no coordination and I suspect he wants to come and see the ladies shakin’ it. But hey, if you ever go to another class, let us know and I bring him to it! Then you’ll have your 2 guys!

Thanks for the men that Zumba blog! My wife and her friend just went to their 3rd Zumba class and they love it. She is trying to get me to go and I said I would. No guys there tho she said. Oh well maybe I will enjoy it and start a Zumba class of my own and then I bet I can get guys to come. Especially firefighters I’m sure. Maybe not in public tho. LOL

Hey, your blog post shows up as the #2 Google hit when searching on “men Zumba”! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m glad I found your page. I’m usually the token guy in the step classes I’ve gone to for more than 12 years. I tried my first Zumba class last night with my two 8-year-olds, and I was able to out-Zumba them! (They quit after 30 mins…. I never thought I’d have more energy than an 8-year-old!)

I plan to start taking the Zumba classes that just started over at the military wellness and recreation center. Maybe I’ll see some guys there since the place is geared for the military, but I won’t hold my breath!

Hello, real men. I am one too. I live in Peoria, Arizona and I started ZUMBA three weeks ago with my wife. It is one of the best cardio workouts that I have had.

By the way, I am a Marine veteran and I am maybe at best one of two to four men in our class. I go to ZUMBA class six days a week M-Sat. Most days are ZUMBA and ZUMBA tone. I call these days (two-a-days). I also do P90X at home and free weights at the gym. In fact, I like ZUMBA so much that I signed up for the instructor training course in December 2010 here in Arizona. If more men saw men leading the classes they may not be intimidated to join in. When I went to the main ZUMBA site (www.zumba.com), of all the instructors in Arizona, I only saw one man……..(only 1). I did not check the other states. It seems to me that there is a lot of opportunity for men if we became instructors. Some men do not want to be led by women for whatever reason but they will follow men.

Also, A lot of the dance moves can be modified however some men may not know how to do this. When I start teaching, I will show the modification but I will keep with the integrity of the move.

On another note, what attracted my wife to me was the fact that I could dance. My wife said that women are attracted to guys that can dance well. If guys knew or understood this, the ZUMBA classes would be filled with men. A lot if not all the moves that are done in class are transferrable to the dance floor in clubs. I was doing a lot of these moves back in the 90’s when I was clubbing.

Lastly, I want to thank the person who started this site. Keep up the good work. Maybe we can start an online men’s ZUMBA club for support or to share idea’s. Just a thought

Well done you guys! Real men do go to Zumba. I have just qualified as an instructor in Edinburgh, Scotland, and like Rance’s comment, I think that men will be more likely to come if the class is run by a man and they can see the benefits of a serious workout that Zumba gives you. I also agree with Rance’s views on latin dance move modification so that the moves appeal to the target audience (As an ex-player, I plan to teach in Rugby clubs). Thirdly R’s wife is bang on the money, women are attracted to men that can dance, and if guys realised this our classes would be full!
Tone.

Well done, spread the word!
